Rumours have been rife about the Queen’s eating habits particularly over whether she follows the supposed royal protocol of avoiding shellfish.

It is unclear where this rumoured protocol started with it largely accepted the Royal Family avoids shellfish when eating out or on overseas trips, but Darren McGrady, who served as Her Majesty’s personal chef, has debunked the reports.

Sharing a picture on Twitter of a royal menu from June 20, 1989, Mr McGrady reveals the Queen ate a shellfish entree.

A decadent Souffle de Homard, which is a French dish featuring lobster, is listed above the main meal of Supreme de Dindonneau Careme.

Mr McGrady captioned the Twitter post: “Proof that the Royal Family DO actually eat shellfish Homard = Lobster.”

The menu is embossed with Her Majesty’s cypher EIIR in gold at the top of the menu and it is understood to have been served on the day the Queen also attended Royal Ascot.

In another menu from the Garter Luncheon at Windsor Castle in 1987, Mr McGrady shows he also served the Royal Family another fish dish of salmon.

Reminiscing about the Order of the Garter, he tweeted: “Monday is Garter Day at Windsor Castle. Used to love preparing Framboises St George every year for Garter Day Lunch and then the rest of the week catering for Royal Ascot parties at Windsor Castle.”

Mr McGrady, who is known as ‘The Royal Chef’ on social media’, served as personal chef to the Queen Elizabeth, Princess Diana and Princes’ William and Harry for 15 years.

Shellfish dishes are a known favourite of Prince Charles, who in 2011 wrote a foreword for a cookbook with recipes inspired by the Castle of Mey Caithness – home of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.

Among the recipes is one that is said to have been a favourite of the Queen Mother, demi homard froid or chilled lobster halves with a dill mayonnaise.
