The Duchess of Sussex has been spotted in notably more demure designs since her May nuptials, including a pastel pink Goat dress for Prince Charles’s 70th birthday celebrations at Buckingham Palace, and a pink Carolina Herrera dress at Trooping the Colour.

The Royal was also seen wearing a cream Givenchy cape dress during her first solo engagement with the Queen in Chester last week.

Lizzi Zita, a fashion commentator, commented on the Duchess’ sartorial shift, stating: “There has been a shift in dress for Meghan, who is classic but a little edgy in her taste.”

Commenting on her wardrobe choice for her engagement in Chester, she added: “For this particular occasion, their first official joint engagement in Cheshire, Meghan is the perfect princess in a more demure classic style.”

Ms Zita noted the Duchess’ choice of a muted colour palette for the engagement was no coincidence, and was instead a “show of respect” for the Monarch.

She said: “She wore neutral colours, and this would have been a carefully considered option not to outshine the Queen.

“The Queen likes to wear strong colour with matching hats so that people can see her easily.”

However the fashion commentator reassured Royal spectators the Duchess would return to her more “edgy” fashion sense in the near future.

She added: “I am sure we will see a return to her signature taste at more casual events but at the moment she is trying very hard to fulfil her duties and stay on the right side of her mother in law so fair play to her, she looked great.”

The Duchess has eschewed her preferred shades of navy and black since her wedding, and has opted for pale pastel and natural colours.

The Royal was most recently seen attending her first ever Royal Ascot on Tuesday, and wore an off-white Givenchy dress with a black-and-white fascinator and belt.

Givenchy is one of the Duchess’ favourite designers, and the French fashion house also designed Meghan’s wedding dress and her ensemble for her engagement in Chester.

The Queen was also in attendance at Royal Ascot, and looked radiant in yellow alongside Princess Anne as they arrived at Ascot’s royal box in the traditional Ascot Landaus carriage from Windsor Castle.

A carriage procession, with the Queen at its head, signals the start of each day of the event, and Her Majesty was joined by newlyweds Harry and Meghan who rode in a separate carriage.

Her Majesty spoke about her fondness for Royal Ascot in her foreword for the official programme, stating: “My family and I greatly look forward to Royal Ascot.

“As the Royal meeting has evolved in recent times, it remains one of Britain’s finest sporting occasions with 300,000 racegoers enjoying the unique heritage of Royal Ascot every year, and many more people watching at home.”
