The People’s Princess wrote the humorous message in either 1979 or 1980, a few years before she developed the eating disorder bulimia.

In it, she admitted to have been defeated by gluttony and feeling “very large” because of all the chocolate she ate.

The letter, which offers a unique insight into the princess’ life, is dated December 28 and was sent by Diana as a thank you message to everyone who was responsible for organising her festive day.

The princess wrote: “Dear all, just a quick note to say an enormous thank you for all you organised and did over Christmas.

“As for that delicious box of chocolates, I have now helped finish them off and now feel very large!”

The letter, which measures 8.25 inches by 5.75 inches, also includes Diana’s telephone number and address at the time, which was 60 Coleherne Court, London.

The princess lived there from 1979, when she received the flat as a coming of age gift by her parents, to February 1981, when she became engaged to Prince Charles.

On the same year, she began secretly suffering from bulimia, triggered by the stress of being pregnant and the discover her husband was having an affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, as Diana confessed in a Channel 4 documentary in the 1990s.

The recipient’s letter, who asked to remain anonymous, has now decided to put it up for auction.

Auctioneers Julien’s Auctions of Beverley Hills said they expect the letter to sell for £1,500.

Martin Nolan, of Julien’s Auctions’s said: “Anything to do with Princess Diana is highly collectable because there are so few items out there.

“There’s a real clamour for anything Diana related, especially in the US, where people can’t get enough of her.

“This letter comes directly from the recipient and has really great providence.

“It offers a unique insight into her humility and normality as everyone can relate to eating too much chocolate and hating yourself afterwards.

“It’s in great condition and could go to a collector or even a museum.

“The vendor has kept the letter for several years but with so much royal coverage at the moment, they have decided the time is right to part with it.”

The sale is set to take place in Las Vegas on Saturday.
