Balmoral Castle has been a Royal Family residence since 1852 and is situated in the Aberdeenshire countryside near a little village called Crathie.
After the death of Diana, the much-loved grandmother kept young Prince William and Harry at Balmoral, where they were on holiday, to keep them away from the press.
It appeared the Queen wanted to protect the boys from the the media storm that broke out in London, as the nation grieved the people’s princess.
Clearly a place of protection and rest for the Queen, she annually takes her summer holiday break in the castle.
The Queen can be seen arriving at the estate during her inspections the battalion of the Royal Regiment of Scotland, who provide security during her stay.
The 92-year-old can been seen in many archive pictures smiling, as she enjoys time with her nearest and dearest, like any normal family.
Over the years the monarch pent most of her time travelling around the world or staying at her residence in London taking part in many royal events, so the pictures are a snapshot of a more candid monarch at ease and care free.
In 1955, a young Prince Charles and Princess Anne are seen happily leading a pair of ponies across the Scottish farmland.
A family woman, Elizabeth spent lots of time with her children and many of these photographs show this.
In one picture, she helps a tiny Princess Anne through the castle window, with an enthusiastic Charles helping her from behind.
For another family pic, Princess Anne accompanies her mother pushing a baby Prince Andrew in a pram.
While in another, a very down to earth mother-of-four, bows down to talk to her son in as he plays in a green toy car.
A lover of nature the Queen explored the grounds of Balmoral on foot with Prince Phillip by her side, the couple are even photographed fishing together during their 25th silver wedding anniversary in 1972.
And never far from her side are the devoted Corgis, in many pictures the dogs can wandering around in the background or posing with the family.
Travelling in style, one shot shows, the now great-grandmother-of-three arriving off the plane in Scotland with three of her dogs in tow.
