Like many young children the Queen was unable to pronounce her full name and subsequently called herself ‘Lilibet’ – which stuck.

The monarch’s parents and grandparents adopted the sweet name with her father, King George VI, once saying that Lilibet is his pride while her sister Margaret is his joy, as shown in the Netflix hit The Crown.

The Queen even signs off her name as Lilibet and in one letter to her grandmother, Queen Mary, she wrote: “Darling Granny. Thank you very much for the lovely doll’s house. I do love it, and I have unpacked the dining room and the hall. Love from Lilibet xxx.”

In March 1939 Queen Elizabeth – then a princess – wrote a get well letter to her grandmother and speaks of her excitement about her upcoming birthday.

“I am very sorry to hear that you have a sore throat. I do hope it will not develop into influenza. That would be a great bore during this cold spell of weather,” she said.

“I expect we will be seeing you at Windsor soon, it does come round so quickly and to think I am already going to be thirteen.

“Your very loving grand-daughter, Lilibet.”

But that isn’t the head of state’s only nickname with her husband Prince Philip pulling out one that reminds us that even top royals are mere mortals after all.

‘Cabbage’ is Prince Philip’s pet name for The Queen.

Some have speculated that the name comes from the French ‘mon petit chou’ which has the literal translation ‘my little cream puff’ – meaning ‘my sweety’, Reader’s Digest reported.

But the English translation of this is actually ‘my little cabbage’.

Meanwhile, Prince Harry and William refer to the monarch as ‘granny’ and were famously heard cheering on their grandmother during the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony when she starred alongside Daniel Craig as James Bond.

Her great-grandson Prince George is also known to affectionately call her ‘Gan Gan’.
