A Freedom of Information request found the borough council made £3,000 an hour on May 19, when the Duke and Duchess of Sussex tied the knot at Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel.
A further £5,000 was made hiring out council facilities on the day and £232 renting “buggies” to the media.
The council said it had not estimated the overall cost of the event as invoices were still being processed but stressed “much of the expenses will be refunded by the Department for Media, Culture and Sport”.
Although hailed a huge success by royal watchers, 11 Windsor residents complained about the nuptials, with one decrying spectators who trampled their gardening club’s carefully manicured flower beds.
“I tried to ask the crowd to stop damaging the flowers but to no avail,” one complained.
Another resident complained they had paid £200 to recover a car that had been towed away by police, while another dubbed the hike in parking charges– from £8 a day to £12 – “extortionate”.
“You are exploiting the increase in visitors due to the upcoming wedding by raising parking prices,” said another driver.
