The Duchess of York, also known as Fergie, described the father of her two children as the “best” and “greatest gentleman” she has ever known, despite the pair divorcing in 1996.

Speaking to American TV host Ernie Manouse 14 years after she divorced the Queen’s son, Sarah insisted she still loves her former flame.

In the 2010 interview, which has resurfaced, she said: “I think the love I had for him then, is the love I still have for him now.

“I still married the best and he’s the greatest gentleman that I know.”

Laughing, she asked: “Why aren’t we married? Everybody says well then surely it should be the happy ever after ending?

“But we are the happy ever after, it’s just not about marriage. It’s more about this extraordinary friendship we have.

“Andrew and I, we have a love which is unfathomable, it’s so great and the two girls love it.

“Should we be married? I don’t think we’re meant to be married.

“I think I am free and wild and going around, but nothing will take his place in my heart.”

The Duke and Duchess of York finally announced their separation in 1992 after spending a lot of time part while Prince Andrew was on royal duties.

Just months later, photographs emerged of the redhead receiving a toe-sucking from oil tycoon John Bryan, who was described as her financial advisor and the couple divorced in 1996.

The pair, however, still maintain a close friendship and even share a residence together.

Talking about how she coped with her transition into royal life at the age of 26 when she married Andrew on July 23 1986 in Westminster Abbey, Sarah told how “nothing” would come in the way of her and her love for the prince.

She said: “Why did Prince Andrew marry me, he could have married a lovely model, he had hundreds of models chasing him, but he married funny old me and that’s because it was meant to be.

“All I knew is that I would go anywhere for love.

“I so believe in romance and that wonderful moment where you fall in love and you are just so with your man that you are like under the skin.”

Duchess Sarah Ferguson even compared her romance with her ex-husband to Princess Victoria’s love for Prince Albert during an interview where she discussed being a producer for the film ‘The Young Victoria’.

She added: “Nothing would stop me, nothing, nothing, just like the passion Queen Victoria had for this country, I had for this man.

“Nothing would stop me, there was no good telling me ‘oh yeah you’re taking on the rest of the world, but you won’t have your husband for the next five years’… no no no never mind, nothing would stop me.”
