Sarah Ferguson, also known as Fergie, used to suffer from a crippling anxiety, as she revealed herself.

The redhead confessed that when her condition arose she didn’t immediately realised what was affecting her.

At first, Fergie believed she was just afraid of the dark.

In a tell-all interview with Canadian TV host Dini Petty, the Duchess said: “I sat up in bed and slept with my eyes open.

“I had to sleep with my eyes open because I was so frighten of the dark I though if I slept with my eyes open I could see any spooks coming towards me.”

But though a journey of self-discovery, she realised her fears of the unknown were actually hiding a deeper problem.

In the interview, originally recorded in 1996 but recently resurfaced, Fergie confessed: “And yet I realise that in fact the fear of the dark was the fear of the demons inside myself.

“All the fears and anxiety I had to come to terms with inside myself.”

The Duchess of York had recounted in various interviews that her life as a royal brought her many joys but also a great deal of fears.

During her 10-year marriage with Prince Andrew, she reportedly suffered to be constantly under the spotlight and scrutinised by the media.

But during a trip to Provence, France, in the 1990s, she finally managed to win against her “demons”.

Overnight, she left her room to venture in the darkness of the night.

Sitting in the dark, she realised she freed herself of her fears.

She said: “And suddenly I realised that it is all alright really, everything is OK.

“I’m still okay and it felt like crystal water.

“It’s a long way and it’s a big battle but I’m here and it is alright.”

Fergie entered the Royal Family in 1986, when she married Prince Charles’s brother, Andrew.

Despite the couple divorced only a decade later, in 1996, following a notorious toe-sucking scandal, Fergie and Andrew are still in good terms.

In an interview released in 2001, the duchess said: “I think the love I had for him then, is the love I still have for him now.

“I still married the best and he’s the greatest gentleman that I know.

“Everybody says well then surely it should be the happy ever after ending?

“But we are the happy ever after, it’s just not about marriage. It’s more about this extraordinary friendship we have.”
