The Duchess of Sussex visited the renowned university in November 2013 to collect the Bram Stoker Medal for Entertainment, just one year after landing her starring role as Rachel Zane in the hit TV series Suits.
But five years ago the burgeoning actress was not considered for the top prize.
Speaking to the Irish Central, former Trinity College student James Wilson said: “In 2013, before she started dating Prince Harry, Markle wasn’t considered top billing and we almost didn’t invite her at all.
“Even after inviting her it was decided she wasn’t important enough for our top award: to become an Honorary Patron of the society.”
Instead of being a patron, she received the Bram Stoker Medal, which was named after the former society member who wrote Dracula.
The award has also been awarded to other household names including Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill.
Meghan was made an honorary member of the Philosophical Society at Trinity College after she delivered a speech several years ago.
She also visited the city again in 2014 in her role as a One Young World counsellor.
One Young World is a UK-based non-profit organisation that gathers young leaders from around the world to develop solutions to the world’s most pressing issues – members include Emma Watson and Justin Trudeau.
During the Royal couple’s tour of the university, Meghan spoke to an American student about the city’s diverse culture.
Grace Vitale commented on their discussion, saying: “Meghan loved the fact that the city is so multicultural.
“There was someone from Toronto behind me in the crowd and she was so excited to see so many Americans too.
“She’s so graceful, elegant, and worldly. I’m obsessed with her.”
The in-demand Royal was also given a special tour of the Old Library in Trinity College, which contains over 200,000 books.
Meghan Markle was also particularly excited to see the historic Book of Kells, which is believed to have been created in 800AD.
Prince Harry also drew attention during the couple’s visit the university, when he was asked by reporters whether “football was coming home” in anticipation on England’s semi-final World Cup clash against Croatia.
The Prince responded with laughing, stating: “Most definitely”.
