The Prince of Wales has spoken out about an oil painting of The Queen Mother by Michael Noakes – a piece of art from his personal collection.

He said: “This oil sketch of my Grandmother was painted as a study for a group portrait painted by Michael Noakes in 1972.

“To mark the 25th wedding anniversary of my parents, The Queen and Prince Philip.

“I acquired it from the artist as I felt it brilliantly captured her likeness, and above all reminds me of the essence of my Grandmother’s personality.

“I admire it often when in residence at Clarence House.”

The breathtaking sketch of the Queen Mother shows her wearing Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee brooch.

The exhibition can be visited at Buckingham Palace from July 21 to September 30 as part of the Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace.

The annual event allows visitors to see 19 State Rooms along with a walk through the amazing Palace garden.

The majority of the exhibition will be made up of art from artists supported by three of Prince Charles’ charities.

These are the Royal Drawing School, The Prince’s Foundation School of Traditional Arts, and Turquoise Mountain.

There will be oil sketches of Prince William and Prince Harry in their “blues and royals” household cavalry regimental uniform on display.

These were painted by Nicky Philipps who rose to prominence in the 2000s as a contemporary portraitist.

The portraits usually hang in Highgrove, the private residence of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Another portrait on display is a never-before-seen pencil sketch of Prince Philip by Bryan Organ.

The final portrait, completed in 1983, hangs in the National Portrait Gallery.

A spokesman said: “Having grown up surrounded by the Royal Collection, The Prince of Wales has enjoyed a life-long passion for art and, as chairman of The Royal Collection Trust and patron of several arts charities, has promoted the creation and understanding of art worldwide.”
