While members of the Royal Family rarely use a last name, when needed they can use Mountbatten-Windsor.
Queen Elizabeth was born of the Royal House of Windsor, therefore her last name is Windsor.
However, when she married Prince Philip in 1947, he carried the name Mountbatten.
According to the British Royal’s official website the Royal Family name of Windsor was confirmed by the Queen after her accession in 1952 after it was adopted in 1917.
The Royal Family was previously know as House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha but it was changed “changed as a result of anti-German feeling during the First World War, and the name Windsor was adopted after the Castle of the same name”.
However, in 1960, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip decided that they would like their own direct descendants to be distinguished from the rest of the Royal Family.
Because of this, when the children of the Queen and Prince Philip need to use a surname, they use Mountbatten-Windsor.
The name Mountbatten-Windsor will continue to be the Royal family’s personal last name unless Prince Charles decides differently when he becomes king.
The official Royal website said: “Members of the Royal Family who are entitled to the style and dignity of HRH Prince or Princess do not need a surname, but if at any time any of them do need a surname that surname is Mountbatten-Windsor.”
