It confirmed the raids took place in the towns of Tynnelsö and Morraröfjärden after police received several tips from the public.

Police presence has been ramped up, with boats and helicopters being used in the city of Strängnäs and in Tynnelsö.

A police spokesman said: We have no person arrested or suspected, but the hunt for the guilty continues.

They are looking for a motorboat, possibly either white or blue, which was operated by two people.

Police said they might have abandoned the vehicle and continued their getaway by car, but remain interested in locating the motorboat.

One of the suspects has been described as being 180 centimetres tall, and was wearing a light beige jacket with long dark trousers.

Then other is slightly shorter in height and heavier in weight, wearing a dark jacket with possibly a red item of clothing below, and had dark hair or something dark on their head.

One eyewitness said: “I saw the boat just there, a white little boat with a motor on the back.

“The two men hurriedly jumped on board. We contacted the police and told them and they told us they had taken something from the Cathedral.

“I knew immediately they were burglars because of the way they were behaving.

“I think it’s awful, it’s despicable that people would steal from a holy building and take something of historic and monetary value. I hope the police succeed in finding them.”

Police have thanked the public with the many tip-offs they are continuing to receive and are appealing them to report any information they might deem helpful as soon as possible or if they see anything suspicious in the area.

Three places at the cathedral and along the escape route towards Mälarvatnet and Bo Setterlinds Park remain closed in the downtown area of Strängnäs.

The jewels – two royal crowns of King Karl IX and Queen Kristina, along with one royal orb – were stolen on Tuesday afternoon from Strängnäs Cathedral, where they had been on public display.

A police spokesperson had earlier said that it is possible to reach Mälaren, Köping or Arboga in the west by boat, or Västerås, Eskilstuna or Stockholm if you drive east.

They added: “It’s 1-0 to them right now.

“I have talked to a person at the county administrative board that says that it is not possible to put an economic value on this.

“These are invaluable objects of national interest.”
