According to Princess Diana’s former bodyguard, Ken Wharfe, the Queen “doesn’t like too much, too soon: and has encouraged Kate and William to let their youngsters enjoy their childhood away from publicity for as long as possible.

This is particularly relevant when it comes to five-year-old George, he said, who is set to be the future king of England.

Mr Wharfe said: “George will know exactly who he is.

“And William and Kate will want to make sure that his moment of entering royal glory is kept away as long as possible.”

Despite being the eldest, George is the shiest, often averting his eyes from cameras to the floor and refusing to wave to onlookers.

On the contrary, his boisterous sister Charlotte, 3, doesn’t appear phased, waving, giggling and skipping past crowds.

The youngest sibling, Prince Louis, who was born in April, has only been seen once in public at his christening at St James’s Palace earlier in July.

In 2016, Prince William told the BBC that a time will come when he will teach George about his position.

He said: “There’ll be a time and a place to bring George up and understand how he fits in, in the world.

“But right now it’s just a case of keeping a secure, stable environment around him and showing as much love as I can as father.”

The Duke and Duchess have selected Thomas’s Battersea as George’s first school and have moved from Norfolk to Apartment 1A Kensington Palace full-time ahead of George’s enrolment.

A source told the Daily Mail: “They know there will come a time when they will have to sit down and talk to him about the implications of his royal status and why so many people are interested in him.

“He is becoming more aware of the cameras. But they are determined to do that at George’s own pace and feel that can all wait a bit.”
