Theresa May and her husband Philip were spotted in a car following closely behind the Queen’s convoy to a church service at Crathie Kirk in Aberdeenshire.

The Queen attended the service near her sprawling estate yesterday.

The royal and Prince Philip are coming to the end of their annual summer break at Balmoral.

The longest-serving monarch traditionally enjoys a weekend with the nation’s prime minister at this time of year.

And it appears there will be a lot to talk about Brexit as talks reach a crucial stage ahead of our momentous exit next year.

Although the Queen remains politically neutral, she is likely to get an update on the prime minister’s Chequers plans, which is under intense scrutiny from Tory Remainers and Brexiteers.

Brexit secretary Dominic Raab was forced to jump to the defence of Mrs May in the face of fierce criticism from both her own cabinet and the EU, both of which have repeatedly batted down her White Paper agreed during a meeting at her Chequers country retreat.

Mr Raab blamed the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier’s “dogmatic legalism” for slowing down progress in the talks.

However Mrs May is hoping that EU leaders will throw her a lifeline by asking Mr Barnier to show greater flexibility in achieving a deal.

Mrs May and her husband attended church with Prince Charles, Camilla and Princess Anne’s daughter-in-law Autumn Phillips.

But there was no sign of the Queen’s husband, Prince Philip, who retired from public duties last summer.

The Queen looked radiant in a lilac blue coat and matching hat, which boasted a black brim.

The 92-year-old looked in good spirits as she smiled and waved to well wishers.

Charles and Camilla have also been enjoying time with the monarch in Scotland at their home in Birkall, on the Balmoral estate.
