However unlike Meghan who adopted the Duchess title when she married Prince Harry back in May and became the Duchess of Sussex, Mr Brooksbank will not get a title from the Queen.

Royal titles are limited to the children of the sovereign, the grandchildren of the sovereign in the male line and to the children of the eldest son of the Prince of Wales.

Jess Ilse, editorial assistant at Royal central, told Express.co.uk: “Prince Harry is in the direct line to the throne despite being sixth in line now, he’s a full-time working royal, and he carries out engagements on behalf of the Queen, so he was granted a new title and it was given to Meghan as well.”

As Princess Eugenie and her sister, Princess Beatrice are not working royals, the offer of a title would not be extended to their future spouses.

She is also not close to the line of succession to the throne, unlike Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Charles who were allowed to grant their wives royal titles.

This also means she does not need an official letter from the Queen granting her permission to get married.

Princess Alexandra and Princess Anne both turned down earldoms from the Queen when they married their husbands and so they set a precedent which has been followed since.

Marlene Koenig, royal commentator, told Hello: “The precedence was set by Princess Alexandra and the Hon. Mr Angus Oglivy in 1963.

“He turned down an earldom. Princess Anne and Mark Philips also turned down an earldom from the Queen in 1973.”

According to the BBC, Princess Eugenie will keep her royal title when she marries Mr Brooksbank.

So she could be styled as Princess Eugenie, Mrs Jack Brooksbank, Ms Ilse said or she could choose not to use her husband’s surname.

One of the beliefs of the now disbanded Way Ahead Group in the 1990s was that the princesses would give up their titles at marriage, however this was not implemented.

The group looked at the future of the monarchy and it was decided that Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice would not have an official working role when they grew up.

Their activities are not listed in the Court Circular or the royal family’s charity database, unless they are accompanying a working royal on one of their engagements.

A rumour circulated in late 2016 that Prince Andrew had asked the Queen to give his daughter’s future husbands earldoms.

However he has denied these allegations and said the reports had “no basis of fact.”

He wrote in a statement: “It’s complete fabrication to suggest I have asked for any future husbands of the Princesses to have titles.

“Whilst I appreciate, as Granddaughters of the Queen, there is considerable interest in my daughters, I cannot continue to stand by and have the media speculate on their futures based on my purported interventions, which are completely made up and an invention.”
