Trevor Rees-Jones was the only survivor of the crash on August 31, 1997 when Diana’s car crashed at the entrance of the Pont de l’Ama tunnel in Paris.

The bodyguard was in the front passenger seat of the black Mercedes on the fateful night in which Diana, her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul were all killed.

While the former paratrooper survived the horrific crash, he was left with devastating facial injuries which included a shattered jaw, broken nose and eye sockets.

Surgeon Luc Chikhani spoke in 2000 about how he reconstructed the bodyguard’s face and said he had never seen so many fractures on a man who was still alive.

He said: “There was hope, he was not dead but the face was completely smashed with many different fractures – it was amazingly crushed.

“I have never seen so many fractures on a man who was still alive.

“The face was completely flat. We had to completely rebuild it. The eyes were apart, the nose was smashed and the jaw was broken.”

Mr Rees-Jones was under the knife for 11 hours in total and 30 metal screws were inserted into his face.

Mr Chikhani added: “I have tried my best to make him look as he did before but I am not God – only God can rebuild him as he was before the accident.”

Pieces of the bodyguard’s bone were flattened in the crash and removed.

Then bone from the back of his skull was used to rebuild his cheekbones.

While the driver and Dodi were killed instantly in the crash, Princess Diana was pulled from the wreckage alive but died in hospital hours later.
