The poll crowned the People’s Princess number one in the icons category, which also features the Duchess of Cambridge as a close second place and the Royal Family’s newest member, the Duchess of Sussex further on down in sixth place.
The results of the poll will come as a blow to 36-year-old Kate and 37-year-old Meghan who remain in the shadow of their late mother-in-law, who died in 1997.
The ballot saw votes cast by 1,500 women in a list of categories such as icons, sport, music, film and television.
Of those women, 57 percent voted for Diana when it came to the most iconic women compared to the 33 percent that voted for Kate and the 27 percent for Meghan.
Meghan, a former Suits actress and wife of Prince Harry, has in the past said she is a feminist and longtime advocate for women.
The self-proclaimed humanitarian and gender equality campaigner also a heart-rendering speech at a UN meeting in 2015.
Her biography also boasts about her “lifelong commitment” to “social justice” and “women’s empowerment”.
It says: “Aged 11, she successfully campaigned for a company to alter their television advert that had used sexist language to sell washing-up liquid.
“Her Royal Highness also volunteered at a soup kitchen in Skid Row, Los Angeles from the age of 13-17. She continued to volunteer at the soup kitchen when she would return home to Los Angeles until the age of 22.”
Votes were based on an array of sub categories such as honesty, confidence, self belief and kindness as well as being straight-talking and having strength.
Diana is remembered for her kindness and wisdom by royal fans.
She once famously said: “Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you.”
The results of the study by skincare brand E45, also revealed that just 55 percent of women admit to feeling strong and that 86 percent wish more was being done to empower women in today’s society.
August 31 saw the 21 year anniversary of Princess Diana’s tragic death.
Sons Prince Harry and Prince William marked the day in private after Kensington Palace revealed no public engagements for the pair who were, aged 12 and 15 when Diana died.
