The Royal Family shared a selection of touching photos of the Princess Royal on its Twitter account to mark the occasion.
They wrote: “Wishing HRH The Princess Royal a very Happy Birthday! #HappyBirthdayHRH”
Princess Anne is the Queen and Prince Philip’s second child and only daughter.
As 13th in line to the throne, Princess Anne is perhaps best known for her equestrian career, which has seen her win many awards including championship medals and Sports Personality of the Year.
Her daughter, Zara Tindall, has gone on to follow in the footsteps of her mother as an equestrian and Olympian.
Princess Anne first married Captain Mark Phillips in 1973 and the couple share two children, Peter Phillips and Zara Phillips.
The pair later divorced in 1992 and Anne is now married to Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
The Queen’s daughter was thrown in to royal life early on, and joined her mother and father on a trip to Austria just after leaving secondary school.
And today Princess Anne is the one of the family’s most hard-working members.
Last year, she worked more days than anyone else in the Royal Family after undertaking 114 days of engagements.
This was compared to 93 by her brothers Prince Charles and 71 by the Duke of York.
She is also a patron to more than 200 charities.
Paying tribute to Anne on her birthday, the Royal Family tweeted: “The Princess Royal has a busy schedule of engagements which see her travel widely across the UK and overseas. #HappyBirthdayHRH
“Known for her love of horses and an equestrian career which saw her compete in the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, Her Royal Highness is involved with riding for the disabled organisations across the Commonwealth.
“Much of her time is also spent supporting the work of Save the Children, of which she has been President since 1970.”
Perhaps, Anne’s most famous moment was back in 1974 when an armed man named Ian Ball attempted to kidnap her.
As she and her son Mark Phillips were returning to Buckingham Palace in March 1974, Ball shot her protection officer James Beaton and chauffeur Alex Callender.
However as he attempted to get Anne out of the car, the Princess Royal shouted: “Not bloody likely,” before considering whether to hit him.
Princess Anne escaped from the incident unscathed and Mr Beaton and Mr Callender were later awarded for their bravery.
