The Duke of Cambridge hijacked the Kensington Palace social media account to shower praise on captain Harry Kane and the lads, who scooped an astonishing victory in the 11th hour.

He said: “I couldn’t be prouder of @england a victory in a penalty shootout! “You have well and truly earned your place in the final eight of the #worldcup and you should know the whole country is right behind you for Saturday!”

He added: “Come on England!”

Finally, he signed the tweet off with the W.

The tweet by the football-mad Prince, who recently shared a snap of him watching England’s previous game with the Crown Prince of Jordan in an epic man cave with a huge TV, triggered an array of reactions from fellow fans.

One asked “Will they all get knighted?”

Another cheered: “Get in there William and get in there England.”

Another, referring to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and newborn Louis, simply said: “Hope you don’t wake the little ones with your cheering!!!

The duke is president of the FA and a keen Aston Villa fan.

This is a breaking news story.
