The newlywed, who married American actress Meghan Markle in a lavish ceremony in Windsor six weeks ago, coughed up a small fortune for the child’s book believed to be the beginning of a small library Prince Harry is making for him.
The book is a 1926 first edition of the story by A.A. Milne, of which 30,000 were printed.
Prince Harry made the extravagant purchase through rare book seller Peter Harrington in Kensington, London, after being inspired by his mother, Princess Diana.
A source told the Sun: “One of Harry’s happiest childhood memories was being read a bedtime story by his mother.
“She loved all the classics and Harry had the brilliant idea of starting a little library of first editions.
Prince Harrys original plan was to buy the 11-week-old tot a £24,000 first edition of Lewis Carroll’s Through the Looking Glass, but opted for Winnie the Pooh which he believed to be a more suitable gift.
The same source said Prince Harry enjoyed reading anything by A.A. Milne, and that Robinson Crusoe was his favourite tale by the author.
Louis’ christening will take place at 4pm today and will be the first time Prince William, Kate and their three children are pictured in public as a family-of-five since Louis’ birth on April 23.
He was the heaviest of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s children, weighing in at 8lbs 7oz following his birth at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington.
Kensington Palace released the exclusive guest list for the 4pm baptism, with attendees including Prince Harry and new wife Meghan, Kate’s parents, Pippa Middleton and new husband billionaire James Matthews as well as Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
The Queen and Prince Philip will not be attending and William and Kate’s other children George and Charlotte are also not featured on the exclusive guest list.
Kensington Palace announced who the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge picked as godparents to Louis.
Odds had been on Prince William’s private secretary, Miguel Head, to be one of Louis’ godparents, and former nanny Tiggy Pettifer.
But despite odds of 2/1 and 3/1, neither have been selected.
Instead, they picked Nicholas Van Cutsem, the father of grumpy Grace, bridesmaid at Kate and William’s wedding, and Florence who was bridesmaid at Meghan and Harry’s wedding.
They also selected Harry Aubrey-Fletcher, William’s old school friend from Eton and Lady Laura Meade, wife of James Meade, another school friend of William’s and godfather to Princess Charlotte.
Lucy Middleton was picked too, who is Kate’s cousin, and Hannah Carter, a friend of Kate’s and William is friends with her husband Robert.
Guy Pelly was also selected, who met William and Harry through the Beaufort Hunt and now owns an array of nightclubs around the capital.
The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, will be performing the service in Westminster.
He baptised Meghan in the run-up to the royal wedding and Prince George the he as born in July 2013.
