Prince Harry is expected to launch later this year a new scheme aimed specifically at fighting knife crime.
Staff at the Royal Foundation have been asked to look into the key causes behind the increasing number of violent acts carried out by young people.
These members of the charity spearheaded by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Duke and Duchess of Sussex are to report back to Prince Harry.
The royal’s project comes as the number of offences carried out with a knife or sharp object reached a new high.
The Office for National Statistics identified 40,147 offences “involving a knife or sharp instrument” in the year ending March 2018.
This represents a 16 percent increase from previous year and the highest level ever registered since records began in 2011.
In London alone, at least 51 people have been fatally stabbed since the beginning of the year, and a total of 1,296 episodes have been recorded by the Met Police from January up to the end of April.
This is not the first time the Duke of Sussex heads a similar project, as he has already one up and running aimed at tackling violence and gangs specifically in Nottingham.
Speaking at the Royal Foundation Forum earlier this year, Prince Harry explained how the charity prefers to work on the real problems behind your crimes rather than just tackling the issue of violence, saying: “At the back end of last year, knife crime skyrocketed.
“I spoke to some of the people at the Royal Foundation and said right, knife crime, let’s look into it.
“But in reality knife crime is a symptom of a cause.
“So therefore go and speak to the young people, which is what we’re doing.
“Speak to those communities and listen to what they think the problems are and then rewind it all the way back to go what is the root cause of all of this.”
Sir Keith Millsm Chairmen of the royal charity, confirmed in the annual report the Foundation’s programme for 2018 would see “new projects on tackling knife crime, further work on conservation, supporting seriously injured veterans, and the expansion of Coach Core”.
While the Duke focuses his attention on knife crime, his wife Meghan Markle, who became the fourth patron of the charity after her wedding on May 19, will work on the “lots of ideas she would like to pursue, particularly around female empowerment”, according to what stated in the foundation’s annual report.
