Prince George has been given an adorable nickname by his devoted parents after friends starting shortening his name.

The tot was born on July 22, 2013 – the first-born of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Friends of the royal couple starting calling Prince George ‘PG’ shortly after his birth.

This inspired his parents to start nicknaming him Tips, after the famous tea brand PG Tips.

The youngster’s full name is George Alexander Louis, but his full title is His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge, though he is often referred to as Prince George of Cambridge.

The tot, who is third in line to the throne and a future king, celebrates his 5th birthday on Sunday.

The four-year-old was last seen in public at the christening of his baby brother, Prince Louise, at St James’s Palace.

And he appeared in the official portraits of the christening, looking utterly adorable in the photographs as he beamed at the camera for the special occasion.

With Prince George and Princess Charlotte joining their parents for Louis’s big day, it was the first time the Cambridges were seen together as a family of five.

The youngster has just completed his first year at school, attending Thomas’s Battersea in south London.

He joined younger sister Princess Charlotte outside the Lindo Wing in April as they visited their newborn baby brother Louis with their father William.

The blonde-haired prince was christened at the Chapel Royal in St James’s Palace on October 23, 2013 in a small ceremony attended by close family members of the couple.

He wore a replica of the intricate lace and satin christening gown made for Queen Victoria’s eldest, Victoria, the Princess Royal in 1841.

It is expected Kensington Palace will release a portrait of the chubby cheeked prince to mark the occasion.

Last year, the palace the royal couple released a cute photo of beaming George to mark his fourth birthday.

A commemorative coin is being released to mark the prince’s fifth birthday, featuring the legend of St George and the Dragon and the year ‘2018.’

The coin comes in a special presentation entitled The Progress of a Prince.

The Royal Mint also released coins to mark George’s first and second birthdays and his christening and gave “lucky” silver pennies to babies born the same day as him in 2013.

Nicola Howell, director of consumer business at the Royal Mint, said: “The birth of Prince George altered the course of history in the United Kingdom and we are pleased to be marking the fifth birthday of our future king.”
