The young prince is celebrating his fifth birthday today and is the oldest of the Cambridge brood.

His parents Kate and William released an adorable snap of George taken on the day of younger brother Louis’ christening.

In the picture, Prince George is beaming dressed in his Sunday best for the christening.

The little prince always is impeccably dressed, from his button-down coats to the cute peter pan collar shirts.

However, George is rarely seen to be wearing trousers.

Why does the young prince only wear shorts?

Voted 49th best dressed in GQ magazine’s 50 best-dressed men in Britain  2015, the then two-year-old Prince was already making waves in the fashion stakes.

His style (no doubt picked out by doting Mum Kate) includes shirts, dungarees, long duffle coats and plenty of colour.

There is a running theme to his wardrobe, and no matter the season, the cute royal is wearing shorts.

By almost solely having shorts in his wardrobe, the little royal is actually following aristocratic traditions.

Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, etiquette expert William Hanson told of how dressing upper-class boys in anything other than shorts would be considered “suburban”.

“It’s a very English thing to dress a young boy in shorts,” he explained.

“Trousers are for older boys and men, whereas shorts on young boys is one of those silent class markers that we have in England.

“Although times are (slowly) changing, a pair of trousers on a young boy is considered quite middle class – quite suburban.

“And no self-respecting aristo or royal would want to be considered suburban. Even the Duchess of Cambridge.”

However, the young prince has been seen wearing trousers in public once, whilst dressed in a scaled-down version of the Blues and Royals frock coat at uncle Prince Harry’s wedding.

George was pageboy, so his grown-up outfit fitted the occasion perfectly.

Now that the prince has turned five, there may be more occasions which call for trousers rather than shorts.

Mr Hanson said: “The usual custom is that a boy graduates to trousers around eight years old.”

Given how closely Kate and William followed traditions with George, younger brother Prince Louis may also have his own wardrobe filled with shorts very soon.
