According to Cosmopolitan magazine the Duchess often takes photos which are officially released, rather than relying on a professional photographer.

The snaps of Prince George and Princess Charlotte which were sent out after their first day at nursery were both taken by Kate.

The royal couple carefully control when their children are photographed, making some moments available so they can keep others private.

A small number of photographers were allowed to picture Prince George on his first day at school, but after that he was almost completely left alone.

By contrast when Prince William started school he was faced with a wall of photographers, which royal commentator Victoria Arbiter claims he found “quite upsetting”.

Similarly the family were left alone during a recent holiday in Mustique, after they released Prince George’s 5th birthday portrait shortly before making the trip.

Royal expert Omid Sobie says this is the result of an informal understanding the couple have with the UK media, where they allow some moments to be photographed in return for general privacy.

Ms Arbiter added: “Nothing is a given, but in terms of managing to keep a good relationship with the British media, it’s in William’s and Kate’s interest to release photos.”

They will also take a stern line with the paparazzi when they deem necessary.

In 2015, shortly after Princess Charlotte was born and when Prince George was just two, the couple issued the press with a firm warning about the tactics which were being used to photograph their children.

A Kensington Palace statement revealed: “One recent incident…was disturbing, but not at all uncommon.

“A photographer rented a car and parked in a discreet location outside a children’s play area.

“Police discovered him lying down in the boot of the vehicle attempting shoot photos with a long lens through a small gap in his hide.”

In Cosmopolitan Emma Baty claims at one point photographers used “other children as bait to lure George and Charlotte into frame”.

The couple are very careful about which photographers they work closely with.

When Prince George started school at Thomas’s in Battersea one of the few photographers present was Chris Jackson, husband of Kate’s personal stylist.
