Pete Davidson was back in full force on Saturday Night Live’s first show after the holiday break, doing a no-holds-barred Weekend Update segment with comedian and SNL alum John Mulaney, which skewered the latest Clint Eastwood movie The Mule and made light of Davidson’s recent suicide threat.
This was the first time Davidson has publicly addressed his disturbing Dec. 15 social media post, which read as a possible suicide note and raised the alarm about the young comedian’s mental state. (He only made a brief cameo on the last SNL of 2018 later that day.)
Davidson was introduced by Weekend Update co-host Colin Jost as being “here to talk about a very important experience he had over the holidays”, adding how happy everyone is to have Davidson back.
“As you know, I had a really crazy month and I want to talk about something that matters a lot,” Davidson said.
Asked Jost, “Mental health?”
Replied Davidson, “The new Clint Eastwood movie, The Mule.”
A little later, Mulaney said, “I have been spending time with Pete to try to show him you can have a comedy that is not insane. A sober domestic life.”
To which Davidson replied. “After observing John’s life, I publicly threatened suicide,” drawing a laugh from the audience before adding, ‘I’m sorry. I shouldn’t make that joke. It is funny though.”
Mulaney and Davidson proceeded to make a slew of jokes about The Mule’s premise, in which Eastwood plays a 90-year-old employed to transport drugs, most stemming from Eastwood’s character’s age. You can watch the full video above.
On tonight’s show Davidson also appeared as a Clemson football player in the Government shutdown-themed Deal or No Deal spoof cold open featuring Alec Baldwin as President Donald Trump.
