Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, joined the Royal Family on May 19, 2018, when she married Prince Harry.

Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, joined on April 29, 2011, when she married Harry’s older brother, Prince William.

As both women were thrust into the limelight, the world watched as they emerged as royals and found their feet in a whole new life.

While both Meghan and Kate handled their royal duties with the grace and style with which they are both synonymous, there are some differences to how they went about their first 100 days.

The first event after the wedding

After Kate and William married, they were first spotted out when they met then US President and First Lady – Barack and Michelle Obama.

Meghan and Harry stepped out just three days after their wedding to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace in honour of Meghan’s new father-in-law, Prince Charles.

The two hit similar style notes, years apart: Kate looked elegant in a nude dress by Reiss and black pumps, while Meghan was glowing in pale-pink dress by Goat with a matching hat by Philip Treacy.

The first Trooping the Colour

Both Kate and Meghan stepped out for the Trooping the Colour looking chic and well-groomed after their weddings.

The celebrations mark the Queen’s official birthday on the first Saturday of June every year.

This was also the first time both Duchesses appeared on the balcony at Buckingham Palace with the whole gang – but Kate had been seen there before when she and William shared a post-wedding kiss as the world watched.

First solo outing with the Queen

Kate made her first solo appearance with the Queen at Buckingham Palace in July 2011.

The two viewed items from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding, which were on display for the palace’s annual summer opening.

Meghan had an extra-special welcome from the Queen, with the monarch whisking the Duchess off on the Royal Train to open a bridge and a theatre in Chester.

The two got along famously, with adorable pictures of the pair giggling and chatting the day away.

The first Royal Ascot

Kate only attended Royal Ascot five years after her wedding.

There have been reports that Kate was invited to the races every year, but politely declined for unknown reasons.

Meghan, on the other hand, jumped at the chance, attending her first Royal Ascot with Harry just a month after her wedding.

The first royal tour

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s first royal tour was an 11-day visit to Canada and the United States in June 2011.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s first royal tour was a far shorter one: two days in Ireland in July.

The first polo match

Nearing the end of their royal tour, Kate stepped out to cheer on Prince William at a polo match at the Santa Barbara Polo and Racquet Club.

And Meghan surprised everyone by popping out to support Harry with her close friend Serena Williams at the Sentebale polo match.

The first Wimbledon

Kate and William went to watch the world-renowned tennis tournament together after they exchanged their vows.

But Meghan chose a different date for her first Wimbledon as a royal: her new sister-in-law, Kate.

One thing that both Kate and Meghan have undeniably in common, is whenever they step out in public, they both hit all the right fashion notes.

It’s clear to see that Meghan is happy to have Kate to look up to, and Kate is thrilled to have another young woman in the family beside her.

And according to the experts, there does seem to be a genuine respect between them which indicates a budding friendship.

Meghan said the Duchess of Cambridge had been “absolutely amazing” in welcoming her to the family.

And when asked by reporters how she felt about the upcoming nuptials of Meghan and Harry, Kate replied: “William and I are absolutely thrilled.”
