The production is particularly important to the couple as it is produced in collaboration with Sentebale, the charity founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho.

Sentebale raises awareness and funds for the charity’s work with children and young people affected by HIV in southern Africa.

Prince Harry had his wife Meghan at his side as the pair mingled with the West End hit’s cast and crew.

And after the play, Harry took to the stage where he proved how much of a Hamilton fan he is – by singing a brief line from “You’ll Be Back” before his speech.

The song is performed by Harry’s sixth great-grandfather, King George, in the play.

Prince Harry sang: “You say…” before the crowd erupted into applause at the 33-year-old’s obvious love of the iconic play.

Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda stomped his feet with excitement as the Prince sang, seen in a clip posted on Twitter by Kensington Palace on Wednesday.

Prince Harry Harry went on to say: “Ladies and gentleman, thank you so much — thank you to Cameron Mackintosh productions, to the show’s creators Thomas Kail and of course Lin-Manuel Miranda, the cast and crew.

“And as already mentioned, a round of applause for yourselves for taking part in this evening’s activities because you have together, raised a huge amount of money to change the lives of thousands of children in Botswana.

“Through that work that we’re going to be doing now, we will be able to stop the generational hand-down of the stigma around HIV.”

Tony award winning Mr Miranda said he expected it to be “fun and surreal” to watch the show with the royals.

“You don’t get that every day. You get heads of state, we’ve had some popular folks come see our show, but you don’t often get a direct descendant of one of your main characters.”

He added it was a “huge honour” to hear that Harry and Meghan were fans of the show.

Last night was not the first viewing of Hamilton for Meghan – the Duchess of Sussex had previously been to see the play in her native USA as well as in the UK.

She said afterwards that she “found it so amazing to watch how that plays versus here and the response is so different.”

She added: “But everyone loves it.”

Meghan made headlines herself last night for her choice of couture: a short black tuxedo dress from Canadian brand Judith & Charles.

The evening out marks the Duke and Duchess’s return to public events after the summer.

Meghan and Harry will carry out their next public engagement at the annual WellChild Awards at The Royal Lancaster Hotel on Tuesday, September 4.

Prince Harry is a Patron of WellChild, a national charity which aims to give children and young people with serious illnesses a chance to recover at home with their families.
