Referring to 74-year-old Thomas Markle’s toe-curling outbursts, Mr Wharfe, 69, said the royal family are at fault for not assisting him through the “daunting experience” of being catapulted into the spotlight as a result of his daughter marrying a prince.
Mr Wharfe told Yahoo’s The Royal Box: “I think the Palace was at fault not to earmark this problem very early on in this engagement or even in that relationship and decide how are we going to address this with her father, how are we going to address this with her mother.
“There are a lot of aides and advisors within the royal household that could have easily have set up something way before this wedding to ensure that the rights and the privacy of her father, irrespective of what he has done in his life – that’s irrelevant – to assist him through this once in a lifetime experience.”
Mr Wharfe also said Mr Markle, who was exposed for flogging staged pictures with the paparazzi for eye-watering sums of cash in the run-up to Meghan’s wedding to Prince Harry, said the former recluse should not be “dismissed” as an “ogre” due to mistakes he has made.
He said: “I don’t think we should dismiss her father as someone who has made mistakes here, an ogre.
“I think that his actions are a result of poor advice or no advice and I think that for that the palace advisors should take some level of criticism for not softening the blow for him.”
He also blamed Prince Harry for not being more “insistent” in guiding former television lighting director Mr Markle through the process of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s nuptials.
He said: “I think Harry could have been more insistent perhaps and I don’t know, this is purely my gut reaction, I think that he’s not an unintelligent guy. He’s been through the mill himself and he knows what press intrusion is like and he has a drawbridge and a portcullis to hide behind when they pursue him.”
Mr Wharfe said Mr Markle’s cringe-worthy interviews have caused the former Suits actress “heartache and the hurt”.
He said: I’m sure he [Prince Harry] doesn’t like this but he doesn’t like it because of the heartache and the hurt it has cause his wife.”
Mr Markle has given a series of damaging interviews in which he has blasted the royal family, insulted Prince Harry’s late mother Princess Diana and accused his daughter of freezing him out.
Meghan’s half-sister Samantha has also appeared on television and has regularly insulted the Duchess on Twitter.
Her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jnr, wrote an open letter to Prince Harry begging him to call off the May 19 royal wedding.
The only person Meghan invited from her family was her mother Doria Ragland.
