Arthur Edwards, Royal photographer, was speaking after Sarah Ferguson’s daughters gave an interview talking about the difficulty of being in the public spotlight.
He said: “It is a tough gig for them, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie’s father is the second son of the Queen and so that makes them princesses.
“You have got lovely Catherine of Cambridge and Megan of Sussex and they are just supermodels with the clothes they wear.
“Beatrice and Eugenie, although they are quite nice looking they are not supermodels.
“Some of the hats they have worn has encouraged ridicule.
“I remember their mother making poor choices. I remember their mother turning up at Ascot in the 80’s and people were saying ‘my god, who let her out?’”
Eugenie is ninth-in-line to the British throne, while Beatrice is eight-in-line.
Interviewed alongside her sister Princess Eugenie for the September issue of British Vogue, Beatrice said: “It’s hard to navigate situations like these because there is no precedent, there is no protocol.
“We are the first: we are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses and doing all of this in the public eye.”
Princess Eugenie has said she is “not stressed at all” about her upcoming wedding to boyfriend Jack Brooksbank.
The couple are due to get married at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, the same location of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s ceremony, on October 12
Sarah Ferguson publicly praised her daughters, Princess Beatrice and bride-to-be Princess Eugenie, as they used their royal fame to shine a spotlight on modern slavery around the world.
The sisters travelled to New York where bride-to-be Princess Eugenie host a meeting on ending the worldwide problem of modern slavery at the United Nations headquarters.
Their mother Sarah, fondly known as Fergie to the British public, took to Instagram to praise her daughters.
She wrote: “So proud of my girls Beatrice and Eugenie United Nations HQ.
“Eugenie hosted a conference about ending slavery in New York Princess Eugenie.”
