The thought of the royal family calling each other pet names may feel strange to some, given the formality with which they appear in public.

However, several members of the royal family have adorable pet names for one another.

Within the couples, there are fond nicknames for one another – with Prince Harry calling Meghan “Meg” and the Duchess calling her new husband “Haz”.

Prince William calls the Duchess of Cambridge “Babe”.

The Queen also has several nicknames, from the self-titled “Lilibet” dating from her youth when she couldn’t pronounce Elizabeth, to “Cabbage” that she is affectionately called by Prince Philip.

Her grandchildren also have given the Queen fond names – known as “Granny” or more oddly “Gary” after a young Prince William couldn’t pronounce the word Granny.

But Prince Harry has his own nickname for his sister-in-law, calling her “Cath” after her full name Catherine.

Radio presenter Scott Mills asked Kate about Harry’s nickname for her, to which she said: “I’m not sure, I’m not that familiar with it.

“But I will answer to most things.”

The relationship between brother and sister-in-law is known to be a close one.

He reportedly asked Kate for her approval before marrying Meghan.

Kate also has another nickname, having been known as “Squeak” at school.

When she visited her old school, St Andrews in Berkshire she revealed the origin of the name, saying: “I was nicknamed Squeak just like my guinea pig.

“There was one called Pip and one called Squeak because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak.”

Another Royal nickname which has become known over the years, was Prince William, 36, revealing that his mother, Princess Diana called him “Wombat”.

Speaking in an NBC interview with Matt Lauer in 2007, William said: “It began when I was two. I’ve been rightfully told because I can’t remember back that far.

“But when we went to Australia with our parents, and the wombat, you know, that’s the local animal.

“So I just basically got called that.

“Not because I look like a wombat, or maybe I do.”
