Kate’s first ever royal summer diary was filled to the brim, as the Duchess of Cambridge attended several events right after she married Prince William at Westminster Abbey on 29 April 2011.

However, Meghan’s summer was not as fast paced as Kate, with the Duchess of Cambridge cramming in far more engagements than her new royal counterpart.

According to royal archives, Meghan was pictured attending royal engagements throughout a span of 15 days from May 22 to the end of August this year.

Meanwhile Kate was seen at events across 23 days during her first summer as a royal, 53 percent more than Meghan.

On her first ever royal engagement, Kate even helped host then US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama.

It is unclear why Meghan and Kate’s first summers as royals were starkly different, but royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams argues it should not be about the numbers.

He told Bustle: “It’s not numbers so much as it is the actual effect of what they do.

“I mean statistics are always tricky, the point is the commitment.”

He pointed out how Meghan and Kate participate in different causes, and both aim to help areas they are passionate about.

The Duchess of Sussex has been very vocal about gender equality and female empowerment, having previously worked with UN Women, and even appeared in one of their commercials.

Fitzwilliams added: “There’s no question that she will be an extremely active charitable ambassador.”

Meghan’s biography on the royal family website explained how the Duchess is a firm believer in gender equality, which writes about how she helped alter a television advert from using sexist language to sell dish washing liquid.

The royal website reads: “These early experiences helped to shape her lifelong commitment to causes such as social justice and women’s empowerment.”

Meanwhile Kate is known for taking a keen interest in mental health issues, hospice care for children and helping veterans.

Speaking about why Kate’s first royal summer was more packed than Meghan’s Mr Fitzwilliams said that Meghan dated Harry for a much shorter time than Kate dated William, meaning the Duchess of Sussex might have needed more time to get used to royal life.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge dated for 8 years while Meghan and Harry met for the first time just two years ago, with their relationship becoming public just last year.

He told Bustle: “Meghan been trained into the job as somebody with a lot of experience in the public eye, but nothing like what this job requires of course.

“The idea is gradually to acclimatise somebody who’s had a tremendously independent life — but obviously being royal is something very, very special. And also to do it in a way that makes them feel at ease and happy.”
