The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been quietly spending more time at the secluded home they rent in the Cotswolds village of Great Tew, according to a friend. The couple are expected to spend Meghan’s 37th birthday today at the society wedding of Charlie van Straubenzee, 30, and Daisy Jenks, 27.
Harry, 33, and his brother William, 36, have been friends with Charlie and his brother Thomas, 35, since childhood. It is rumoured that Harry is to be best man. Charlie was an usher at Harry and Meghan’s wedding. William and Kate, 36, are also likely to be guests.
But after that, Harry and Meghan will join the Queen and the rest of the Royal Family at Balmoral for the remainder of the month and are unlikely to be seen in public until September.
Friends say this will be a welcome respite after the series of controversial interviews about the Duchess given by her father Thomas Markle and her half-sister Samantha Markle.
Only yesterday Samantha, 53, reacted to reports that Harry and Meghan will be keeping a low profile with a barbed tweet appearing to compare her to evil Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians.
In her tweet the Duchess’s half sister mockingly said: “OK, so Cruella Deville (sic) is retreating. LOL. Let me know how that works out for you.”
Samantha, who is rumoured to be going into the Celebrity Big Brother House, has dubbed Meghan the “Duchess of Nonsense”. She also called Harry a “wuss” and said he should have married his old flame Cressida Bonas instead.
In his latest outburst, last Sunday, Mr Markle accused his daughter of cutting him out of her life and claimed the Royal Family were trying to “silence” him.
He even dragged the late Princess Diana into the row by saying she would have “loathed” the way he has been treated.
The retired lighting director revealed he has not spoken to his “beloved bean” Meghan for more than 10 weeks.
Mr Markle, who has never met his son-in-law but has spoken to Harry on the phone, says the rift is “punishment” for him staging fake paparazzi pictures before the wedding.
A close friend of the couple said Harry is concerned about the attention Meghan has been receiving since their wedding in May.
“They spend a lot of time in the Cotswolds, more than people realise,” he said.
“They are in the country way more than they are in London and they are enjoying a low-key and very domesticated start to married life.”
Another source said: “Harry worries that there is too much hysteria around Meghan and he wants to row back a bit.”
Harry and Meghan’s last official engagement together was at the Sentebale Polo Cup in Berkshire last week for the African charity he founded in 2006. It ended a busy month which included a tour of Dublin. Kensington Palace declined to comment.
