The Duchess of York, 58, told her 96,000 social media followers about her “excellent” and “very comfortable” stay at the luxury hotel and boasted of the “superb atmosphere” days after forest fires devastated nearby Mati, killing almost a hundred people.
The former wife of Prince Andrew and mother of princesses Beatrice and Eugenie said: “Staff and customer service excellent atmosphere superb, very comfortable, a great place for a stay in Athens @marriotthotels.”
The flame-haired divorcee also, who also posted her own snaps of the hotel, posed for pictures taken by Greece’s Ministry of Tourism where she grinned on a balcony overlooking a horizon of trees and shrubbery.
The flurry of posts triggered a wrath of fury from her followers who branded her comments “disappointing and inappropriate”.
One commented said: “Wild fires killing scores only a few miles from here and all she can talk about is the luxury hotel.”
Another raged: “Tactful, not! In the same of heaven! Do you not see the news!”
Another chipped in: “Just a tad inappropriate and disappointing.”
Though others were quick to defend her actions.
One social media user commented: “Tourism is a primary source of income for Greece, so if the people stop coming in, jobs and livelihoods are lost.
“I think Greece has suffered enough financial losses and tragedies. We must all move forward.”
Earlier this week, the Duchess, who divorced 58-year-old Prince Andrew, the Queen’s son and brother of Prince Charles, in 1996, expressed her “deepest sympathy” to those affected by the tragedy and praised emergency services in the country for their tireless work.
She also vowed to provide “every possible help” during a meeting with the nation’s tourism board.
But the photos she posted of the hotel triggered more criticism, with many left wondering if she had been “paid” by the Marriott in the aftermath of the fire.
One commenter said: “Your post smacks slightly of an advertisement for Marriott Hotels and as such your motivation to say this makes me wonder if you weren’t paid to make this statement.”
