Ken Wharfe, who was Diana’s personal protection officer for five years, rejected suggestions that people around William and Harry had let them down.
Mr Wharfe, 69, told Yahoo News chat show The Royal Box last week: “If anyone has let them down it’s probably themselves.”
He cited Harry wearing a Nazi outfit on the 60th anniversary of the Holocaust and his game of strip billiards in a Las Vegas hotel before he went to Afghanistan with the Army Air Corps in 2012.
“All these things gave him the negative publicity – you can’t blame anyone for that other than himself,” Mr Wharfe said.
Mr Wharfe said the Duke of Sussex, 33, should have “insisted” Buckingham Palace aides were sent to help his future father-in-law Thomas Markle, 74, deal with the sudden media interest.
“This was a case that was badly dealt with by the Palace,” Mr Wharfe said.
Harry and his aides told Mr Markle not to speak to the media, but Mr Wharfe said the Duke should have known he needed more support than that.
“He’s not an unintelligent guy. He’s been through the mill himself, he knows what press intrusion is like,” Mr Wharfe said.
“He has a drawbridge and a portcullis to hide behind when they pursue him. Thomas Markle doesn’t.”
Mr Wharfe blamed Mr Markle’s attacks on both the Royal Family and his daughter on poor advice.
“I think the Palace was at fault not to earmark this problem very early on,” he said.
