Ariana Grande has broken a YouTube record after the video for her new single Thank U, Next was viewed by 829,000 fans at the same time upon its release.

The singer broke the video sharing site’s premiere record on Friday with the throwback video, which references ’00s films including Mean Girls, and begins with high-school students spreading gossip and rumours about Grande.

516,000 chat messages were also sent on YouTube as fans talked about every moment of the clip.

YouTube’s official Twitter account posted: “The thank u, next video was so good, it broke the internet (or at least delayed YouTube comments from posting for a bit). Comments are still working on the video, they’re just delayed!”

At present, Thank U, Next holds over 39,500,000 views on YouTube. It’s said that the video hit the one million mark in less than 34 minutes.

It has also been revealed that Grande is now the most streamed artist worldwide on Spotify and Thank U, Next became the fastest song in the streaming site’s history to surpass 100 million streams.

Grande has also shared an emotional letter about the Manchester attack in her new docu-series, Ariana Grande: Dangerous Woman Diaries.

She said that the day of the attack “will leave me speechless and filled with questions for the rest of my life”.

She added: “Music is an escape. Music is the safest thing I’ve ever known. Music – pop music, stan culture – is something that brings people together, introduces them to some of their best friends, and makes them feel like they can be themselves.”
