The Queen’s sister was “always very, very cross” with Prince Charles’ and Prince Andrew’s ex-wives for the sex scandals and subsequent embarrassment to the Royal Family, according to a royal biographer.
Speaking on BBC documentary ‘Princess Margaret: The Royal Rebel’, Craig Brown, unauthorised biographer of ‘Princes Margaret’, said: “She was always very, very cross with people like Diana or Fergie who got into scandals and so she would never have done a secret interview with Panorama or anything like that.”
And nothing could prove this more than when Princess Margaret cut Princess Diana out of her life for good following her controversial interview with Panorama in 1995.
During the sensational appearance, the people’s princess admitted adultery and in further shame to Prince Charles said: “There were three of us in the marriage, so it was a bit crowded”.
From that day on, Princess Diana would never be forgiven by the Queen’s sister who wrote her a “wounding and excoriating” letter to blast her behaviour.
And this estranged relationship would be left in tatters when Princess Margaret learned of Princess Diana’s 1992 bombshell autobiography by Andrew Morton, ‘Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words’ and again “sent her a furious note of reproof”.
Princess Margaret also complained to a friend: “Poor Lilibet (the Queen) and Charles have done everything they can to get rid of the wretched girl, but she just won’t go.”
And when Princess Diana died in a horror car crash in 1997 “it did little to diminish Margaret’s animosity”, according to 2017 royal book ‘Ma’am Darling: 99 Glimpses’.
The book told how Margaret, who died in 2002 after a series of strokes, said the hysteria of Diana’s death was “rather like Diana herself.
“It was as if when she died she got everyone to be as hysterical as she was”.
Princess Diana was not the only woman to experience the wrath of Princess Margaret – she was also “cruel” to Sarah Ferguson after her split from Prince Andrew.
Sarah, also known worldwide as Fergie, sent the Queen’s younger sister a bunch of flowers to make amends in the weeks after her split from Andrew was leaked to the press in 1992.
But a furious Princess Margaret sent the flowers straight back to Sarah along with a scathing note.
Speaking in 1997 documentary ‘Fergie: Downfall of the Duchess’, Judy Wade, writer and royal journalist, said: “The Duchess of York had sent flowers to Princess Margaret with a little note, no doubt trying to renew their once good friendship and the flowers had been sent straight back with a note from Princess Margaret saying ‘how dare you send me flowers, have you ever considered what damage you have done to the Royal Family?’
“So I think Princess Margaret was cruelly unfair to do such a thing when it was a kind gesture from Sarah, very well intentioned, and i think that indicates exactly how the Royal Family treats somebody who steps out of line, except if they’re born royal.”
