It is understood the Taser was detected as he walked through airportstyle security gates shortly before 1pm yesterday.

The Queen is currently at Balmoral Castle on her summer break.

The 38-year-old man was detained after security staff made the find at the visitors’ entrance to the palace.

Last night he remained in custody. Scotland Yard said there was no link to terrorism.

Visitor Graham FitzGerald, 49, made the short trip from Hampstead, north London, to walk around the palace yesterday afternoon.

He said he was unfazed by the incident.

Mr FitzGerald said: “I would want to know how he got hold of a Taser. That’s my concern – and has he got any mental health conditions?

“If someone’s going to attack you, they’re going to attack you irrespective. I don’t feel particularly concerned as no one has come to any harm.”

Johanna Ekberg, 39, who was visiting London from her home in Sweden, expressed concern at using the London Underground after previous terrorist incidents but said it had not prevented her from visiting the capital.

Speaking outside the palace, she said: “These things don’t really happen where I live in the countryside.

“I felt nervous about the Tube but I did it anyway.”

Among the many rickshaw drivers who frequent the palace one said reports of the arrest were “disturbing”, especially at this popular attraction.

The driver, a former English teacher from Poland who gave his name as Ralph, said: “I feel definitely uneasy, especially as it’s at the palace that may potentially pose as a target.

“It’s disturbing. The police do patrol the streets quite regularly and you see police cars every ten or 15 minutes. It looks safe but you never know.”

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: “Police were called at 12.47pm on Sunday to a report of a man detained by security staff at the visitor entrance to Buckingham Palace.

“Officers attended and at 1pm a 38-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm, namely a Taser.”
