The Duchess of Sussex only revealed her touching tribute to the 53 nations of the Commonwealth on her wedding veil when she walked down the aisle with Prince Charles at her plush Windsor wedding.

The 37-year-old told ITV: “I knew that it would be a fun surprise as well for my now husband, who didn’t know, and he was really over the moon to find out that I would make this choice for our day together.”

The former actress went back to her roots and appeared on camera for a special programme called Queen of the World, in which she reveals all about her lavish nuptials watched by millions back in May.

She also said she requested a patch of fabric for her ’something blue’ and that a snip of the garment she wore on her first date with Prince Harry, 33, was stitched into her gown ready for the big day.

She also said her veil had “surprised” other members of the royal family.

In a clip from the programme, she said: “It was important for me, especially now being a part of the royal family, to have all 53 of the Commonwealth countries incorporated.”

Speaking of Prince Harry’s surprise, she added: “I think the other members of the family had a similar reaction and just appreciation for the fact that we understand how important this is for us and the role that we play, and the work that we’re gonna continue to do within the Commonwealth countries.

“So, yeah, it was good news all around, I think, so I hope people liked it as much as I liked helping to create it.”

Meghan’s wedding dress was designed by Givenchy and features flowers from the Commonwealth states.

As well as wintersweet, which grows in the garden at the Nottingham Cottage one she shares with Harry, she also had the California poppy embroidered onto the piece, in a nod to her native America.

Givenchy dressmakers washed their hands every 30 minutes while stretching the veil to make sure it remained pristine.

The documentary is he first appearance in a TV programme since marrying Prince Harry on May 19.

Meghan’s father, Thomas Markle Snr, 74, pulled out of walking her down the aisle after the Mail on Sunday revealed images of him posing in fake paparazzi pictures for eye-watering sums of cash.

Mr Markle has since tried to reconcile with his daughter.

Queen of the World is on ITV at 9.15pm on Tuesday.
