The comments were made by leading Royal historian Anna Whitelock, who spoke to Express.co.uk about the changes the American has had to make since marrying Prince Harry.
Dr Whitelock explained: “Now she’s a member of the Royal Family she has to give up brand Meghan, at least as a kind of individual identity.
“It all has to be the Royal Family and the monarchy.”
She reiterated this point saying: “She has to give up the Meghan Markle brand.
“As an individual actress so much of it was about promoting brand Meghan and now it has to be about the values of the Royal Family and promoting that.
“Of course she can very much have an individual identity within that but she has to balance it.”
Dr Whitlock noted how, as a public figure in her own right, Meghan already had an unusually strong personal identity when her relationship with Prince Harry began.
She said: “She’s been an actress which was all about promoting brand Meghan.
“That’s what it was all about.
“She used to run a blog, it was about trying to get work, promoting herself, it’s what she had to go as an actress.”
Before Meghan married Prince Harry in May there was debate about whether her publicly expressed political leanings and activism could cause problems for the Royals.
However, Dr Whitelock expressed confidence that this won’t become a problem.
She argued: “I think that although she will have causes she will be massively advised by those around her to make sure that whatever she does, it doesn’t challenge the values of the Royal Family and I don’t think it will.
“Perhaps if she comes to deliver them in an assertive way, and champion causes which other Royals haven’t, that might make her distinct.
“I don’t think she’s going to massively rock the boat by pushing causes which aren’t in line with the Royal Family.”
Dr Whitlock is the author of ‘Mary Tudor: England’s First Queen’ and ‘Elizabeth’s Bedfellows: An Intimate History of the Queen’s Court’ which deals with the reign of Elizabeth I.
She also regularly commentates on the contemporary royal family, including on both UK and international TV.
