In an interview from 1994, the Prince of Wales commended Camilla for her friendship after his marriage to Princess Diana ended in a “intolerable” divorce.
Charles dismissed accusations he cheated with Camilla, calling her a “good friend”, after interviewer Jonathan Dimbleby grilled the prince on his alleged affair.
During the interview, the prince said: “All I can say is there’s been so much speculation feeding on evert other kind of speculation and it all becomes bigger and bigger.
“And all I can say is that there is no truth in so much of this speculation and Mrs Parker-Bowles is a great friend of mine.
“I have a large number of friends I’m terribly lucky to have so many friends who I think are wonderful and make a whole difference to my life, which would become intolerable otherwise.
“And she has been a friend for a very long time and, along with a lot of other friends, and will continue to be a friend for a very long time.
“And I think also most people would probably realise when marriages break down, awful and miserable as that is, that so often you know that it is your friends who are the most important and helpful and understand and encouraging.
“Otherwise you would go stark raving mad, and that’s what friends are for.”
Princess Diana and Prince Charles married on 29 July in 1981 at St Paul’s Cathedral, in a fairytale wedding viewed by millions across the world.
The royals split up in 1992 and officially divorced in 1996, after the Queen sent the couple a letter, advising them to end their relationship.
Speaking about Charles’ affair with Camilla, Diana famously said: “There were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded.”
Charles and Camilla were in constant contact during his marriage to Diana, and the pair regularly exchanged letters and gifts in secret.
Diana talked about a time Charles was sent a pair of cufflinks with intwined C’s, immediately realising it was a gift from Camilla.
She said: “We were opening our diaries to discuss various things. Out comes two pictures of Camilla.
“And on our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists. Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly.
“So I said ‘Camilla gave you those didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.'”
“And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea the two ‘C’s but it wasn’t that clever.”
