In Prince Charles: His Children, the Paparazzi & Marriage to Diana aired in the aftermath of their deteriorated relationship, the Prince of Wales addresses rumours of infidelity on the People’s Princess.
A clearly uncomfortable Charles is asked by a male interviewer who does not appear on camera that “the most damaging charge that is made in relation to your marriage is because of your relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles you were persistently unfaithful to your wife and thus caused the breakdown, what is your response to that particular criticism?”
Prince Charles, clearly rattled by the question, repeats the accusation in a deadpan manner before eventually giving his answer, in which he mostly showered now-wife Camilla Parker Bowles and his other “friends” with praise while avoiding eye-contact and fidgeting in his seat.
He said: “That’s a persistent criticism is it?
“Well I… the trouble is these things again as I was saying earlier are so personal it’s difficult to talk about these in front of everybody I mean obviously anybody wouldn’t want to…
“But all I can say is there’s been so much speculation feeding on every other speculation that becomes bigger and bigger, and all I can say is there is no truth in so much of this of this speculation and Mrs Parker Bowles is a great friend of mine and I have a large number of friends I’m terribly lucky to have, so many friends, who I think are wonderful and they make a whole difference to my life which would become intolerable otherwise, and she has been a friend for a very long time and – along with a lot of other friends – and will continue to be a friend for a very long time.”
He added: “And I think most people would realise that when marriages break down, as awful and miserable as that is, that so often it is your friends who are the most important and helpful and understand and encouraging and otherwise you would go stark-raving mad.”
The cringe-worthy video was uploaded in 2011 but has been doing the rounds on the internet since the 21-year anniversary of Princess Diana’s death weeks ago.
The video also appears to have had its comments disabled.
Prince Charles married Camilla in 2005 and the couple have been together since, even recently celebrating 13 happy years as husband and wife.
He and Diana divorced in 1996, with each of them sharing custody of Prince William and Prince Harry.
The brothers were aged 12 and 15 when their mother died in a car accident in 1997.
