Much speculation often unfolds around which colour the Queen will don for upcoming royal engagements.
But why does the Queen always wear gloves?
The royal wave is a staple of any royal occasion, known around the world, and there is a reason that wave always comes from the Queen’s gloved hand.
The Queen purchases her gloves from Cornelia James glove makers and has done since her honeymoon in 1947.
Genevieve James, creative director and daughter of the founder of the glove makers told Reader’s Digest there are a couple of reasons why the Queen chooses to wear gloves.
Her dressing style means that without the perfect pair of complimenting gloves, her outfit would look unfinished.
As well as this, gloves protect her hands from dirt or damage when shaking hands with so many people on one given day.
However, the Queen has more than one pair up her sleeve so as never to be caught wearing dirty gloves.
Ms James told Reader’s Digest: “I imagine she always has two or three pairs in her handbag to spare.”
Once a pair of gloves are dirty or damaged, that does not mean the end of them – as the Queen will send the gloves for repairs and cleaning as they are quite costly at £110 a pair.
Ms James said: “I think the royal family wants to be seen as being economical, not wasting money on things like that.
“She’ll wear her gloves for 40 years and will pull some out from a long time ago.”
The particular style of gloves the Queen wears are that of the Francesca or Regina Collection with a custom-made length.
The brushed cotton gloves stretch five inches from the base of the thumb up her arm.
According to Ms James: “When you’re the queen and you’re shaking hands, you don’t really want to show your arms.
“The glove goes a bit under her sleeve, so you don’t actually see any arm.”
The Queen is not the only royal to wear gloves, with Princess Anne also visiting the renowned glove makers.
Ms James says her mother convinced Princess Diana to also wear gloves: “Princess Diana never wore gloves for a long time, and my mother noticed she bit her nails.
“She said she should wear gloves. The next day we got a call from the palace … and Diana asked for gloves.”
Kate Middleton also had gloves made by Cornelia James, and other famous clients include Rihanna and Madonna as well as the casts from Harry Potter, Downton Abbey and Mama Mia.
