Celebrity trainer Jenni Rivett opened up on the years she spent training the Princess of Wales, explaining how Diana found relief in physical exercise.

Ms Rivett started training Diana in 1991, after she had been recommended to the Princess of Wales by a mutual friend.

Diana had been suffering from bulimia for years, but after meeting Ms Rivett she learned how to use workouts as part of a healing process.

Explaining Diana had informed her about her ongoing battle with the crippling eating disorder and mental health condition bulimia nervosa, the trainer revealed how the princess didn’t want the illness to bring her down.

She said: “Actually she had such an incredible sense of humour.

“The way that was brought up was with a joke.

“She was just trying to make light of it.”

Shortly after Diana started working with Ms Rivett at The Harbour Club in Chelsea, London, the princess became “disciplined” and “incredibly dedicated”, attending three sessions of training a week.

The Princess of Wales first revealed to the world her struggles with bulimia in 1992, in her bombshell biography wrote by Andrew Morton.

Revealing she developed the eating disorder during the difficult pregnancy with Prince William, while she was already aware of the Prince of Wales’ affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Diana said: “Everyone in the family knew about the bulimia, and everyone blamed the bulimia for the failure of the marriage.“

Diana also candidly revealed she believed the eating disorder was the most “discreet” way to harm herself rather than alcohol or anorexia.

But, according to Ms Rivett, the workout sessions soon became a key part of Diana’s ongoing recovery, and helped her maintain a healthy lifestyle after she was healed.

The trainer said: “When you train with someone and they start to feel that strength going through their muscles it is so empowering and it just helped so much to make you not want to go that direction again.”

As Diana became more involved with charities and her humanitarian work, it became increasingly difficult for her to dedicate as much time as she wanted to her physical training.

Yet, she didn’t abandon her workout routine, managing to juggle between her public life and training sessions, according to Ms Rivett.

She explained: “The challenge was that she was the Princess of Wales.

“There was a lot of stuff in her life.

“The way we got through it was for her to turn up and just keep that discipline.

“She knew after every session she would feel amazing.

“It would help her to continue to better herself and feel more and more empowered and make the eating disorder a thing of the past.

“She liked to have a bit of a laugh when she trained and obviously there were days when she was having a really bad day, and I’d be a little bit lenient on her and not boss her around too much.

“She used to feel so great afterwards and the aesthetics are just a bonus.”
