Meghan and Harry have actively followed in Diana’s footsteps, carrying her legacy on as the pair continue to champion her humanitarian causes.

Diana was known for her love towards helping the community, and contributed to several causes throughout her life – including a campaign for a world wide ban on landmines, changing stigma around HIV and AIDS, as well supporting the arts.

Meghan and Harry share similar passions towards her causes, with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex taking a keen interest in the endeavours of the late Princess.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “Her legacy lives in the commitment of William and Harry and their families as Diana is the inspiration behind their charitable activities.

“Harry said in the interview to mark his engagement how much he wished she was there to celebrate and he and Meghan aim to become humanitarian activists inspired by her and her legacy in removing the stigma from HIV/AIDS, her campaign against landmines and her ability to reach out to the less fortunate despite personal unhappiness.”

Harry continues to champion his mother’s cause for a worldwide ban on landmines, and is now a patron of the Halo Trust – an organisation dedicated to protecting the livelihoods of those affected by war.

In 2017, the British Government pledged £100m to Prince Harry’s campaign against landmines, 20 years after Diana helped bring the issue to global attention.

To mark the 10th anniversary of his charity, Sentebale, Harry said: “My mother died when I was very, very young, and I didn’t want to be in this position. Now I’m so energised, fired up, to be lucky enough to be in a position to make a difference.”

His charity, Sentebale – which means “forget me not”, named in honour of Diana – was founded in 2006 to help children living with HIV and AIDS in Lesotho.

Meghan has also declared her passion for humanitarian causes, and before her marriage to served as a UN Women’s Advocate for Women’s Political Participation and Leadership and volunteered with the organisation, One Young World.

Her biography on the Royal Family website reads: “These early experiences helped to shape her lifelong commitment to causes such as social justice and women’s empowerment.”

The Duchess is regularly seen with Harry at charity events, and the pair were recently spotted in London attended the Hamilton musical, where proceeds will go to Sentebale.

The Diana Award was established in 1999 to recognise young people for extraordinary work in their local communities.

It is now an independent charity that offers mentoring services to young people and campaigns against bullying.

Princess Diana tragically died on August 31, 1997 in a car crash in Paris, it is understood the her children William and Harry marked the day yesterday in private.
