Kensington Palace have published no engagements for the princes on 31 August, indicating the Duke of Cambridge and newly married Duke of Sussex will mark more than two decades since the People’s Princess with quiet reflection.

Whether the pair and their wives Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, have anything in private planned for the day remains unclear, but the palace have confirmed that no public engagement will take place.

This means whatever both families do to mark 21 years since Diana died in the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel with her lover Dodi al Fayad will be done away from the eye of the public.

A Kensington Palace spokeswoman told Express.co.uk: “There is no official engagement planned and we don’t have a comment on what the family would be doing.”

Last year saw William and Harry, aged 15 and 12 when the tragic death took place, pour over emotional tributes to their mother who was just 36 when she was rushed to Pitié-Salpêtrière Hospital in France’s capital, where she died soon after.

The driver of the car, Henri Paul, was also killed with 42-year-old Mr al Fayad, but Diana’s bodyguard, Trevor Rees-Jones, survived.

Heartbreaking footage of the young princes walking behind their mother’s coffin as it was carried to St James’s Palace sent shockwaves across the world.

As well as the lack of public engagements undertaken by the princes, this year also marks the first time Harry, 33, will mourn the death of his mother with new wife Meghan, 37.

Although no public event for the anniversary will take place, it does not mean the memory of Princess Diana has been forgotten.

A whirlwind of royal events and engagements took place this year – including Prince Harry’s royal wedding to the American former actress.

Their May 19 nuptials also saw many pay tribute to the Princess of Wales in subtle ways.

The Duchess of Sussex wore her late mother-in-law’s sapphire ring and Diana’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, gave a powerful speech that paid homage to her sibling at the wedding watched by millions worldwide.
