The Duchess of Sussex has made the casual, “messy bun” her signature hairstyle, even though it in fact breaks Royal protocol.

Most of the female members of the Royal Family, including the Duchess of Cambridge, stick to clean, polished hairstyles, but this is not the case for Meghan.

Sociologist, image consultant and personal style guru Dr Anna Akbar told Elle that the “messy bun” is “strategic” for the Duchess of Sussex.

She said: “I would say it’s no different than distressed or ripped jeans where there’s a sort of strategic messing-up that might make it look old or look cool.

“It’s in the same vein.”

Ms Akbar added that even though it looks casual and “messy”, it is most certainly done by professionals.

The sociologist stated: “My guess is it took more time than it does when you put your hair in a messy bun to go to a workout class.

“It is not a half-ass messy bun.”

Ms Akbar also noted the former Suits actress is trying to instil “cool” into the Royal Family with her hairstyle, and is trying to create her own persona.

She explained: “The way we communicate is a full-spectrum, multi-sensory communication.

“Bottom line, Markle is aware she’s sending signals.

“I don’t think anything that she’s doing is haphazard.”

Another reason for the Duchess of Sussex’s signature hairstyle is that it is quick and easy to maintain.

Meghan has previously admitted that she doesn’t like to “waste time” getting ready.

In an interview with Esquire two years ago, she revealed: “When I get ready to go out, it’s half hour and we’re out of the door.

“I don’t want to waste time getting ready: I want to go out and have fun.”
