After the Royal Wedding, rumours flooded the internet about where Meghan and Harry might be jetting off to on honeymoon.
Africa, India, Canada and Ireland were all said to be potential destination picks, but none were confirmed.
One thing was certain: after months of intense media scrutiny, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were eager to have a proper break from the public gaze.
And it seems they achieved it, keeping even those in the upper ranks guessing.
A source close to the royals has revealed that it wasn’t only the public kept in the dark about the plans: even the most senior Kensington Palace staff had no idea either.
In fact, the source revealed, the only two people who knew their plans were Harry’s brother and best man Prince William, and the Queen.
The source said: “No one knows where they went, only his brother and the Queen were told at first and a few immediate family members know now.
“The most senior members of the royal household staff still have no idea where they went. They were completely frozen out of all plans and preparations.
“It was very important that the newlyweds had a private honeymoon where they could be alone together out of the public eye.”
The source added: “Royal protection officers were involved, but only a handful of the most trusted and those who have been by Harry’s side for years. The whole operation was watertight.”
Most expected the couple would let the cat out the bag after they returned, but it seems they are keeping this part of the nuptials just for themselves.
The source said: “After the honeymoon went smoothly and Harry and Meghan weren’t spotted it was thought that the secret might be let out, at least to the inner circle of staff. That hasn’t been the case.
“It is has been one of the most tightly guarded secrets in the Palace for years and is mainly due to the fact that news of them dating was leaked.”
And after it was reported that the couple would have a one night ‘mini-moon’ in Ireland, it’s likely they decided the only way to keep the honeymoon private was to go totally off-grid.
The couple endured a tough time after news of their relationship was leaked, with Prince Harry eventually issuing a deeply personal message to the British media and public to try quell the vicious trolls abusing Meghan online.
This latest news comes as it was revealed Meghan Markle headed off to her former home town of Toronto, Canada over the weekend.
Harry is not thought to be with her as he is said to be in Botswana on a working trip to join the Annual General Meeting for Rhino Conservation in his capacity as a patron.
It is not yet known if the Prince will jet off to meet his American wife, but there has been speculation that she’s heading to Los Angeles next to visit her mother, Doria Ragland.
This trip comes amid a difficult time for Meghan’s personal life.
Her father, Thomas Markle, has become increasingly critical of her and the Royal Family in the British Press, most recently calling the family “cult-like.”
She is not expected to visit him in his home in Mexico on this trip.
