Aides working in the palace said that it is “probably too late” to bring Mr Markle into the fold and there had been plenty of opportunities to prevent this crisis from happening.
Mr Markle sparked more outrage this weekend when he revealed he had slammed the phone down on Prince Harry after the Duke of Sussex confronted him about staging paparazzi photos for cash.
He said Prince Harry was “absolutely right” to challenge him but because he was so “rude” he slammed the phone down.
A royal aide told the Mail Online it is “probably too late” to get Mr Markle back on board unless Meghan herself “turned up on her father’s doorstep – and even that might not work now”.
Another aide, who was involved with handling the arrangements for Prince William and Kate’s wedding in 2011, says the handling of Mr Markle has been “inept”.
They said: “The perception is that he was treated very much as an afterthought.
“No one went to visit when the answer would have been to have someone fly out from London and explain to him how things were going to happen.”
The aide adds the pair could have treated the situation similarly to how Kate’s uncle Gary was dealt with after he became embroiled in the headlines over alleged drug taking.
They added: “Even after he started talking to the media it was not too late.
“When Kate’s uncle Gary found himself in the newspaper spotlight he was brought into the fold, not excluded.
“He was told he would be invited to everything but that if he felt inclined to speak out and give interviews, we asked that he let us know in advance so that we would be prepared.
“No one seems to have thought of that this time.”
The aide says Meghan and Harry should have paid Mr Markle a private visit and the royal couple should have invited the whole Markle family to the wedding.
They said: “The trouble stemmed from well before the wedding when there must have been an opportunity for Harry and Meghan to pay a private visit to her father. This was long before he started giving interviews.
“I also think the Palace should have invited the whole Markle family; they wouldn’t all have come and it would made them feel included and less likely to make the negative comments they have been making.”
Mr Markle has also said he was “disrespected” even though Prince Harry had warned him in the past about the press.
“That it would end in tears. He said, ‘They will eat you alive’. He was right.”
However, Mr Markle has given a number of explosive interviews after he was also caught out staging a series of pictures with the paparazzi that raked in £100,000.
When the staged pictures scandal broke, Mr Markle says he suffered a heart attack and was admitted to hospital – despite being pictured lugging a six-pack of beers out of an off licence the day after.
He pulled out of his daughter’s Windsor wedding on May 19 leaving Prince Charles to walk her down the aisle at the eleventh hour.
