Mr Markle, 74, used the Duchess of Sussex’s big day last Saturday, August 4, to plead with her to believe his heart attack was real following claims he used it as a decoy after being exposed posing in fake pictures for cash.

Mr Markle claimed surgery on his heart was what prevented him from attending his daughter’s royal wedding to Prince Harry on May 19 and not news he had staged a series of pictures in the run-up to the royal wedding for £100,000.

He revealed he scrawled in the birthday card: “I didn’t fake the heart attack.

“I really wanted to be with you.

“Love, Daddy.”

Mr Markle also said he sent a second birthday card to the former Suits actress that had singing animals on it.

That card read: “Happy Birthday, love Daddy.”

The 74-year-old, who celebrated his birthday weeks before his daughter’s, said he sent the birthday cards to “Duchess Meghan” via Federal Express, to an address at the palace.

Mr Markle’s other daughter and half-sister to Meghan, Samantha Markle 52, also wished the Duchess a happy birthday, but took the opportunity to take a swipe at the new royal for not sending their father a birthday card.

Taking to Twitter, the outspoken American told her sister: “Happy Birthday Meg!

“It would be so lovely and appropriate of you to send DAD a BELATED birthday card for his July 18th (birthday cake emoji) @KensingtonRoyal Cheers!”

In another interview, Mr Markle said he hung up on Prince Harry when he called him while recovering in hospital.

Mr Markle said the prince, who had warned him about speaking to the press before, said: “If you had listened to me this would never have happened.”

Mr Markle, who called the prince “rude” and the call that came through from his hospital bed “bad timing”, replied: “Maybe it would be better for you guys if I was dead, then you could pretend to be sad.”

He then said he “hung up” on Harry.

Speaking to the Mail on Sunday of the heated exchange, Mr Markle said: “I’m not mad at Harry.

“I’m not mad at Meghan. I love them.

“I wish them well.”

He added: “But as for the rest of it, f*** it. I’m done.”

Kensington Palace declined to comment.
