The fashion designer has opened up about being asked to create Meghan’s evening dress for her wedding on May 19.

Explaining why she thinks the Duchess of Sussex chose her as a designer for her big day’s second dress, she told Elle: “I think Meghan chose me for reasons other than just a beautiful dress – plenty of people can do that.

“She is not a difficult client to make look beautiful.

“Amal [Clooney] called me and asked me to do it, as did Oprah.

“I look at that Amal dress, and it is made of sustainable viscose that took us three years to develop.

“And I think, obviously I am a British designer, but I think being a woman and being a women’s woman played a part.

“They are all women’s women. It’s a big deal.”

The beautiful white halterneck gown Meghan wore at Windsor cost some £60,000.

Speaking about its design, Ms McCartney previously told the BBC she wanted it to reflect her new “austere” role in the Royal Family.

She said: “The role that she’s taken on is very austere, it’s very serious and I think there’s a great weight that she has acquired through that and she takes it very seriously.

“It was the last moment that she could reflect sort of the other side to her… the joy and the human within her.

Ms McCartney, the daughter of former Beatles member Paul McCartney and photographer Linda McCartney, also revealed she became friend with the former Suits star after working together on other designs, including a black coat the Duchess wore to Wales back in January.

And she also designed the £1,512 dress Meghan wore to the Royal Albert Hall in April.

Ms McCartney said: “Meghan approached me and we worked on other things.

“She wore other pieces of mine and we had a friendship.

“And then she asked me to do her second wedding dress.

“I was honoured and I still am.”

Following the wedding, Stella McCartney designed a collection called “Made with Love” with 46 gowns identical to the one she created for the Duchess of Sussex, available both in black and white.

The dresses come at a much lower price than the one paid by the former actress.

Available only at the London’s Old Bond Street brand’s store, they are priced £3,500.

A spokesperson for the brand has also confirmed to the Daily Telegraph that the collection will turn into a bridal collection in spring 2019.
